Oscar Clay

Origin & Influences: Not gonna lie: most if not all of Oscar's inspiration comes from things viewed as stereotypically Australian. From his weapon (what could be more Australian than a boomerang that turns into two huge flippin' knives?) to his out-doorsiness to his faunus species to his laid-back attitude, this guys screams Australia. Even his last name, emblem and color draw from the country- what natural masterpiece says Autstralia better than an Ochre-clay plataeu at sundown? That said, he's got more than a little Roo in him (yes, as in winnie-the pooh). That's where Oscar gets his afinity for leaping about a battlefield, as well as a bit of his color scheme.

Nicknames: Joey, Springheel.

Colour: Ochre, a yellowish, earthy orange

Age:  Eighteen

Species: At a glance it's apparent that Oscar is a faunus, a Kangaroo faunus to be precise. This manifests itself in Oscar's long face, flat nose, thick eyebrows and wide set eyes. Well, all that as well as the ears. The big, swiveling kangaroo ears on the top of his head give it away more often than not. Kangaroo faunus are naturals at keeping tabs on their surroundings, possessing enhanced night vision as well as excellent depth perception. It's interesting to note that his vision is meant for keeping tabs on a mobile environment, meaning his eyesight actually has a tougher time making out stationary items. The crown jewel of his senses though is his hearing, hands down. While it's true that many faunus have an extra pair of ears, Oscar can consciously swivel at least one of his ears to cover just about any angle, honing in on the origin of a sound without even having to turn and look at it.

Personality: Oscar is quite carefree, often viewing what others see as irritations or inconveniences as opportunities to try out new things, or interact with people he normally wouldn’t otherwise. On top of that, thanks to his growing up on the borderlands he’s quite desensitized to numerous occurrences that others would lose their cool over. This can lead some to see him as a bit of an airhead, as he tends to greet everything from a pop-quiz to his scroll cracking to bullying to an ambush by a pack of beowolves with the same nonchalant shrug and a dismissive wave of his hand. He just doesn’t get people who stress over every little detail, preferring to just focus on what he knows and is skilled in while tolerating everything else he's unsuited for.

This stands out academically: while he is a grade-A student in combat studies, he barely manages to keep his head above water in other classes like math, science and history.

He is VERY fond of the outdoors, and loves little else more than getting a chance to display the numerous skills he has relating to them. In fact, some say he’s a little bit too quick to resort to using these techniques. We’re talking about a guy who would prefer to set a snare inside a teacher’s office and check on it regularly rather than simply look up their office hours. But all the same, he just loves the chance to explore new, untamed turf and study various animals (and occasionally Grimm) in their native habitat.

He greets just about everyone he knows on a first-name-basis (whether they like it or not) and will resort to addressing a person he's unfamiliar with by a silly nickname as a ruse to acquire said first name. Being from a primarily faunus village, he has very little experience with the interspecies tension more prevalent in his new surroundings. He’ll often treat incidents as though they're specific to the parties involved rather than acknowledge a further-reaching societal issue. But when he himself becomes the target of such aggression- or any aggression from another person, really- there’s always one solution: a good fight. He’ll ask the person outright to a duel, and say the winner wins the argument. He’s not the type to hold a grudge, and as such he considers these arguments as a clash of ideals rather than that of people. He’s a very gracious winner, often helping foes get to an infirmary or the like after the issue is "settled."

He loves chewy foods such as jerky and bubblegum, so he tends to keep a few such treats on his person at all times. But should he run out, he may absentmindedly start chewing on something else and not even notice. Pencils, stalks of grass and the ends of headphone jacks are good examples of potential victims. He also has a bad habit of using his aural spring-heels to go around obstacles that are perfectly passable by other means. Examples include hopping over a short flight of stairs instead of climbing them, vaulting over a bench instead of walking around it, and getting a running start just so he can get over that cluster of gossiping students that seems to block every hallway in every school ever.

Appearance: Standing at only five feet, five inches and weighing in at 130 pounds, Oscar isn't exactly the beefiest of. students. That said, his tanned skin and strong legs hint at his outdoorsy upbringing. His face features steely blue eyes and ochre hair. This hair is always a bit out-of-whack, kept in a style that resembles what might result from a normal, neck-length haircut being thrown out into the wilds and going rabid.

He usually wears a light-blue polo shirt, khaki shorts and a khaki vest (both with plenty of pockets), A belt with even more pouches lining it, a pair of black fingerless gloves to protect his palms (which are vital in using his weapon and building traps), a grimm-tooth charm he wears on a necklace (an old trinket from his dad) and a pair of leather hiking boots. It would seem as though some part or other of the ensemble is constantly grass-stained, torn or in some other state of disrepair. He also wears a black armband on his left arm which holds a tough, durable little scroll he uses to keep track of his traps. He keeps his weapon stored on his back in its boomerang form, tucked under his waistband. Concealing the weapon in this location is as simple as putting his vest over it. His emblem is displayed prominently on his belt buckle and on the handles of his weapon.

Affiliation: Oscar is an Arcadia student, a true blue hunter in training and loud and proud about it!

Backstory: Oscar was born in a little place most other folks would call a "Bumpkin patch." Small, deep in the Vera Woodlands, and inhabited almost entirely by various types of faunus. Out in Oscar's home community, every single person has a role, from farming to crafting to defending the little settlement. This last one is quite a serious task: out in near wilderness, outside police jurisdictions and far off the beaten trail for most Hunters, the village is- in theory at least- quite vulnerable to Grimm attacks. However thanks to several highly competent warriors that call the settlement home (two of which being Oscar's parents,) the Grimm inhabitants of the woodlands can be fended off well enough.

The boy's father was the most skilled among these warriors, being an ex-hunter who had settled in the village when his hunting days were done. The boy was raised on boasts and recounted tales of his father's exploits on various hunts, and he has learned a great deal about aura, combat, weapon-smithing and the habits of numerous Grimm under his ol' man's tutelage. A few years after his father's untimely passing, Oscar left with Professor Maddox to take classes at Arcadia, after a run-in with the professor and a pack of jaegerfangs.

Quotes:

"Bah, don't worry 'bout it."

"I can clear that... Alley-oop!"

"Awright then, let's go- you and me!"

"Cripes, just look at the teeth on this fella!"

"All ya gotta do is just hit the damn thing. And if that don't work, hit it again! Rinse, repeat! Nothin' to it!"

"City-folk dress awful fancy, considerin' how these're supposed to be our fightin' threads. Y'ever notice that?"

Hunting

Weapon: Oscar's hunting weapon is a pair of Symmetrical Returning Projectile Kukris (SRPKs) named Switch and Rue. They are a pair of large knives with blades that bend at a sharp angle around halfway up their length, which makes them especially good for slashing and chopping attacks. Their shape also makes them well-suited for disarming opponents by trapping a weapon between the crooks of the two blades. They're great for slipping into a target's range of attacks, landing a few quick, brutal blows, and retreating again.

For longer-ranged engagements, the upper half of each blade slides into it's sister weapon's hilt, and the lower half of each blade can retract into its own handle, allowing the knives to become what he calls the Switch'n'Rue. You know, for simplicity's sake. This weapon at a glance looks at the a normal, artistically decorated boomerang, but when thrown the handles slide down the wings to reveal the knife-blades, extending almost entirely before ratchets in each handle hook into. the catches on the backs of the blades, to prevent it from flying apart in flight.

Aura and Semblance:

Since he was taught by his father, he has an almost instinctive grasp on how to handle his aura, which manifests as a light blue field when in use. While his aura is plentiful and he can call upon it quite easily, the laid-back nature of his soul allows him to modify his aural barriers using the Semblance of Repulsion. Using this ability, Oscar can cause his field to expand outwards from his body, so that it appears as more of a bubble than a skintight barrier. While in this state, Oscar takes much less direct damage from attackers, but in return the barrier exerts a repulsive "push" between himself and attackers. In effect, the bubble is very, very bouncy. His aura may appear at a to be much more powerful than others due to the size of the barriers he can emanate, but in reality he's about as effective as anyone else his age, defensively.

The real value of the Semblance of Repulsion is not in protection, but in flexibility: Oscar couldn't simply wade into a horde of grimm and expect to tank his way through it: While in the bubble, his own attacks are just as useless and springy as his foes, and it doesn't even allow Switch and Rue to return to him once thrown. On the other hand, trading damage for knockback at the right time in the right place can be quite potent: Oscar can focus his repulsion to center around certain points, like his hands or feet, in order to enact certain tactics or tricks. For example: a well-placed repulsion punch or kick could send an opponent flying into a nearby trap or hazard, or repulsive block at the right moment could knock a foe off balance. A full-body repulsion orb could protect against a long fall, or (much to Oscar's delight) a smaller pair of orbs around the feet can be used to hop around with surprising speed and agility.

Fighting Style: Oscar's fighting style is one of constant motion: he doesn't have a lot of muscle to put behind his attacks, so he puts his entire body's weight behind them instead. At close range he'll spring around larger foes, raining kicks and slashes while bouncing between the foe's attempts at retaliation. The faunus is small and quite difficult to hit mid-bound, a fact he exploits mercilessly in the heat of battle. At long range Oscar will fling Switch'n'Rue, expertly guiding the projectile to the point of performing trick-catches upon its return for kicks. He can handle it with such accuracy as to use its double-blade section to lop off grimm limbs, trigger traps remotely, or attack from behind while standing in front of a target. Depending on his prep-time before a fight, he may have several traps set up nearby that he'll try to lure or force opponents into.
